Welcome to the Alumni Class of 1979

'79 Celebrates the Frozen Apple

The annual Thanksgiving weekend “Frozen Apple” Cornell Hockey game took place at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Saturday, November 26.  Classmates participated in both the pre-game gathering of the Classes of the ‘70s at the Local West bar and restaurant, and a post-game celebration of the 3 – 1 victory over the University of New Hampshire held at Rock & Reilly’s in the nearby Renaissance Hotel.  Here are some pictures from the event; more are in the Class December Newsletter:

Elizabeth Garrett Inauguration and Homecoming Recap:

It may have seemed like a tall order to top last year's Sesquicentennial Homecoming weekend, yet Cornell pulled out all the stops for a second consecutive year with another spectacular Homecoming weekend marking the inauguration of the University's 13th - and first female - president, Elizabeth Garrett. Weekend highlights included a post-inauguration community picnic, Big Red football vs. Bucknell, concerts by the Glee Club and indie band Passion Pit, the Homecoming 5K, and a faculty panel debate on "Democracy and Inequality."

Classmates who participated in the weekend gathered for beverages and conversation at the Statler on Friday evening following the fireworks and laser light show at Schoellkopf Field. If you missed this class tradition and other Homecoming fun this year, consider attending the festivities next September 23-24.

Follow the links below to experience 2015's Inauguration/Homecoming excitement.

Get "On Your Feet!" in NYC:

We're proud to report that classmate Lon Hoyt is the musical director for the Broadway hit "On Your Feet!" - the Emilio and Gloria Estefan story. A theater outing to attend a performance this winter is in the works. Additional information to follow.

Classmates Impacting Campus:

Though it's been decades since our matriculation at Cornell, the Class of '79 continues to leave its footprint on campus. Congratulations to the following classmates for their recent local contributions to the Cornell community:
    •    Seth Klarman, benefactor of Klarman Hall (nearing completion between Goldwin Smith Hall and East Avenue), which will serve as a gateway to the Arts Quad, providing future Cornellians with a new, state-of-the-art humanities building.
    •    Artist James Siena, whose Labyrinthian Structures exhibit is on display through December 20 at the Johnson Museum of Art.
    •    Landscape architect Marc Peter Keane (currently a visiting scholar at Cornell's East Asia Program), who designed the Tiger Glen Garden, installed at the Johnson Museum of Art's new wing, and the Six Friends Garden at the Cornell Plantations.
    •    Mann Library Director Mary Anderson Ochs and Associate Professor Andrea Simitch (Department of Architecture), who were featured speakers at the Trustee Council Annual Meeting weekend this past October.
    •    Solar developer and Class President Jeff Weiss, who is completing projects this month at various Cornell locations: Karman Hall and the Human Ecology Building on campus and the Geneva Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, NY. Jeff's firm is also working on the solar panel project at the Cornell Tech campus currently under construction in NYC.
We'd love to tout the accomplishments - local and otherwise - of other alumni in future newsletters. Please contact us at the email addresses below to provide information we can report.
