Calendar of Events
The Club hosts a variety of events throughout the year. Our annual calendar typically includes the following:
January – Cornell Cares Event. This national University effort encourages students and alumni to give of their time and talents in their local communities. Milwaukee area Wisconsin alumni gathered at Kathy’s House to share food, support and encouragement with guests. Kathy’s house provides housing to family members while their loved ones receive medical care at local hospitals. Madison alumni gathered and sorted books for the Reach A Child program.
February/March – Scholarship Fund Raiser. Historically held on the coldest day of the year (or so it often seems), alumni enjoy the warmth of good company as they gather for different activities to raise money to provide Cornell scholarships to Wisconsin students.
April – Leadership Banquet. Alumni, friends and guests from all over the state gather together for an evening of great food and camaraderie. The evening includes distinguished guest speakers who entertain and educate us on various topics, ranging from wines to politics to economics. The evening also features a brief annual meeting to elect our Club’s officers and directors.
April/May - Accepted Student Receptions. Receptions are held in both Milwaukee and Madison for accepted students and their parents. This is a great chance to meet other new Cornellians and interact with alumni.
May – Volunteering at the Special Olympics. A truly moving and rewarding experience for all participants, alumni gather in early May to present the medals at the Wisconsin Special Olympics.
August – The Cornell Wash. Our Club’s annual summer picnic and ‘student send-off.’ An event for current students as well as alumni of all ages and their families.
October – Zinck’s Night. Join alumni around the world on the 3rd Thursday of October to raise a toast to Theodore Zinck. For those who have forgotten the lore, Teddy was the sole proprietor of a favorite drinking establishment in Ithaca. For decades since his passing, alums have been celebrating the man and his favorite past-time on this special evening. Events are held in both Milwaukee and Madison.
Recurring events include Book Clubs in Madison and Milwaukee where alumni read various books of interest. Reading selections sometimes include the books used in the Cornell Student Reading Project or books written by Cornell alums and faculty. Other activities include a variety of social events in the Milwaukee and Madison areas, including Happy Hours, Brunch and Team Trivia.
Each year, the Cornell Club of Wisconsin offers several scholarships to current Cornell students from Wisconsin. The availability of this financial assistance is due to the generosity of individual donors. As of December 2015, we have awarded 59 scholarships for an approximate total of $77,000.
The Cornell Club of Wisconsin Scholarship was established on April 1, 1989. Monetary additions to the fund come from the proceeds of various club fund raising activities. In adition, the club routinely offers the opportunity for anyone to donate to the scholarship fund. The money designated for scholarships is forwarded to our endowment at the university where it is invested in Cornell University's Long Term Investment Pool, which is overseen by the Investment Committee of Cornell's Board of Trustees.
