Happy Slope Day, 1865 Society! |
• | Cornellians have celebrated some form of spring holiday for over a century, whether it was called Spring Day, Springfest, or Slope Day. | • | In 1938, Spring Day festivities included converting Schoellkopf Field into the Roman Colosseum for a “Circus Maximus” that featured chariot races. In the 1940s and 1950s, Spring Day included a battle of makeshift boats on Beebe Lake. | • | Free concert band and jazz concerts on Libe Slope date back to the 1940s, but one of the first major Slope concerts to bring in nationally-recognized performers was when Seatrain, King Harvest and Aerosmith performed in May 1973. | • | The modern Slope Day with popular music, fences, and catered food and beverages dates back to 2003 in an effort to make the holiday safer | |
And now, you can join THIS year's Slope Day festivities! Check out the Ho Plaza Live View as the students enjoy Slopefest 2019. Happy Spring!
