News from the CACO Board

Let’s talk about diversity & inclusion. These are values we’re committed to here on the CACO Board. For our context, diversity refers to the representation of different types of people in a space or community, while inclusion looks at how people feel integrated and valued in that space.

Some of you may know this, but before I started my term as CACO President in 2021, I served as the vice-president of our Diversity & Inclusion committee. I’m proud to serve on a board that has carved out the space for this work to happen. Without putting structures in place such as committees, positions, written statements, and community guidelines, it’s common for this work to be put on the backburner or lost to turnover.

I’d like to applaud the leadership of the Class of 1987 who have taken note of that challenge and made changes to their class council to prevent that loss from happening. They have incorporated diversity & inclusion work into their official class structure by creating a new position on their class council. Anecdotally, it is the first such position that I’ve heard of on a class council, and I think it’s a great step for them. Further down in this email, you’ll find a little more information about their work.

Diversity & inclusion work can look different for every group or community! Committees can work in varied ways to improve communications, policies, or events to make them more inclusive. We would love to hear more about all of your experiences with D&I. What are programs or initiatives that you’ve seen or participated in that have inspired or energized you? Let us know by emailing caco@cornell.edu. Long or short, Cornell-related or otherwise, successful or still a work-in-progress, we welcome your messages as we continue this journey together.

We hope this spirit of reflection and growth carries you into this back-to-school season.

Class Officer Spotlight: Debra Stern '87 & Darrell Butler '87
The Class of '87 established a Diversity Chair position on the class council at their 35th Reunion in June. They are incredibly fortunate to have Darrell Butler '87 and Debra Stern '87 serving as co-chairs since Darrell brings subject matter expertise as a professional diversity, equity & inclusion practitioner and Debra helps translate these principles into practice informed by her lifetime of Cornell volunteer service. Darrell led a D&I self-awareness exercise with the class council at their inaugural meeting on the Sunday morning of Reunion weekend to set the tone and expectations for the next five years which was described by participants as "inspirational.”

Get to Know: Kamillah Knight '13, MPA '15, MBA '22

Kamillah is a Director-at-Large of the CACO Board, currently serving on both the Students & Young Alumni and Diversity & Inclusion Committees. While she holds multiple degrees from Cornell, she has been involved with her undergraduate class council since early 2020. Reunion Weekend made a lasting impact on Kamillah; she recalls the excitement of coming back for her five-year reunion which overlapped with CBAA's reunion. “Not only was I thrilled to see and bond with my classmates and CBAA members, but to see the work that was put in that led to the strengthening of connections and lasting memories, it encouraged me to want to get more involved as an alum.” Her favorite piece of advice she’s received as a class officer is that it’s okay to think outside the box!

The Role of the Class Council Member
How can class council members best be engaged to maximize their roles? Stacey Silberzweig, President of the Class of '87 and CACO Board Member, offers her insights in this quick new video. “A common question we hear on the CACO board is how do we engage class council members? Many positions are well-defined like class president, treasurer, and Reunion chair. However, the class council member role is less defined.” Learn how Stacey’s leadership has shifted the expectations of how class council members can contribute their time and connections for maximum impact.
