News from the CACO Board

Last month, during Cornell’s Trustee-Council Annual Meeting in Ithaca, the CACO Board held our own meeting to discuss ongoing initiatives and committee collaborations. We also had the privilege of hearing updates directly from Associate Vice President for Alumni Affairs, Michelle J. Vaeth '98. We heard some progress reports on Cornell’s current campaign, “To Do the Greatest Good”, which includes an ambitious (and first-ever) engagement goal of reaching 200,000 alumni. Engagement here refers to a variety of activities including attending an event, volunteering with an alumni organization, or making a gift to any area at Cornell. Class officers have an important and strategic role in helping the university meet this goal, since we as a group represent the entirety of Cornell’s alumni base. Peer-to-peer engagement is going to make all the difference as we continue to plan events, invite classmates to meet up virtually or in person, and encourage others to similarly dedicate their time.

Luckily, there are many opportunities to help bring classmates into the fold as we head into the holiday season. From afar, you might send a friend a Cornellians article or let them know that its print digest is now available for subscriptions (first issue coming in April). In New York City, you might invite a friend to attend the annual Sy Katz '31 parade which will be happening this Saturday, November 19. The following week, on November 26, join us as we’ll be cheering on our Big Red men’s hockey team during Frozen Apple at Madison Square Garden. Sixteen classes have block seats and we’re really excited to see such a strong class presence. Looking ahead to the new year, we hope to see lots of you at the Cornell Alumni Leadership Conference (CALC), which will be held February 17-19 in sunny San Diego. Class Officer Spotlight:

Hannah Jurkowicz '11

Hannah (pictured above in the front row, third from left) is the Vice President of the Class of 2011. She started in the position at the height of the pandemic, though that did not stop her drive to provide her classmates with engagement opportunities. Hannah spent her first year working with her staff contact and fellow Second Decade class officers to gauge what types of programming would be most favored. At the tail end of her first year in the position, Hannah hosted two class meet-ups in NYC. Both events had roughly twenty classmates in attendance and provided an opportunity for classmates to help her plan the events. These meet-ups have served as a kickstarter for 2011 class meet-ups around the country! If you would like to collaborate on any of the upcoming meet-up events or have any ideas or suggestions to share with the Class of '11, reach out to the officers at cornellclassof2011@gmail.com.

Finding Missing Classmates

To engage classmates who have missing, incorrect, or partial contact information in the university’s database, Stacey Silberzweig, President of the Class of '87 and CACO Board Member, offers her insights on how to reconnect in this new best practices video. Relying on “networking and a little detective work” can get you pretty far when it comes to re-engaging classmates. Learn more about how the class council of '87 divided their workload and successfully used their network to drum up excitement for their 35th Reunion. Big thanks to Stacey for sharing the lessons learned!
