News from the CACO Board

Happy new year! We hope you enjoyed a peaceful end to 2022 and a fresh start in 2023. As the new year unfolds, we are looking forward to reconnecting with you. Members of the CACO Board will be present at the Cornell Alumni Leadership Conference (CALC), which will be happening in sunny San Diego next month February 17-19, 2023. We hope to see many of you there. And if you haven’t signed up officially yet, don’t forget: the deadline for early bird registration is coming right up on January 16!

We are also busy preparing for our CACO Annual Meeting, which will be held virtually this year on February 27, 2023 at 7 p.m. EST. Please save the date and keep an eye out for future details and a registration link in a few weeks. We hope you’ll join us to learn more about what the CACO Board and other classes have accomplished recently!

Frozen Apple Hockey

Looking back at this past November’s Frozen Apple Hockey at Madison Square Garden in New York City, many classmates gathered to cheer on the Big Red men’s ice hockey team as they took on (AND BEAT) UConn. Sixteen classes organized class blocks and sold almost 1,000 tickets!  Eight classes also had pre- or post-game events, including a combined event for the classes of '20-'22 which saw 140 attendees! This annual tradition will return to Madison Square Garden in 2023, so I encourage you to consider participating next year.

Thank you to Austin Haycox '20 for the above photo of alumni enjoying the game.

2023 Alumni Trustee Election

The 2023 Alumni Trustee Election is right around the corner! Candidates will be announced tomorrow and voting will be open February 1-28. Be on the lookout later this month for a Volunteer Toolkit to support peer-to-peer voting outreach, as well as a special lunchtime session where you can ask questions about the election and brainstorm ways to encourage voting with your classmates.

Class Officer Spotlight

Jeff Lamontagne is a Class Council member for the Class of 1991. This is Jeff’s first Cornell volunteer position as an alumnus and he has jumped head first into engaging with his class. When asked if any class officers had ideas for events this fall, Jeff raised his hand and offered to share his incredible trip to South Korea where he explored 13 dinosaur track sites, many with science-forwarding and mind-blowing stories. The fascinating dino stories were a hit! The event was opened up to all alumni and over 80 Cornellians were in attendance from an alumnus from the Class of 1954 to kids who hope to be future paleontologists.

To submit a class officer to be considered for a spotlight in a future newsletter, please e-mail caco@cornell.edu.

Class Officer Nominations

For those of you whose class year ends in a 3 or an 8, we are quickly approaching the time to nominate your classmates to join you as class officers…or to renominate yourself! This is an important step in passing the torch and bringing new volunteers into the fold. Nominations open on January 20th and will remain open for one month through February 20th. You and other classmates can submit nominations in CUVolunteer via the individual class communities.

For best practices and tips on recruiting new volunteers, check out CACO’s online toolkit.

Cornell Adult University

Cornell Adult University (CAU) presents incredible opportunities for in-depth, lifelong learning with Cornell faculty in the classroom and around the globe. Here’s just one of CAU’s many exciting offerings planned for 2023: Ancient Cities of North African and the Iberian Peninsula, August 15-27, 2023. Travelers will explore the meeting of faith and philosophy in the Western Mediterranean with Scott MacDonald, the Norma K. Regan Professor in Christian Studies.
